Campus Life
While attending SMBS, students are encouraged and guided through various practical experiences and activities that help teach them how to witness, help others, and work in teams. The following are types of activities that students participate in throughout the program:
Car Wash
The main purpose of this project is to help raise funding for the missionary trip. Students dress in similar t-shirts, make signs and encourage cars to drive in and get a car wash. While a car is being washed, the owners of the vehicle come out and are offered a drink, more information about SMBS, the missionary trip, our purpose and personal testimonies. This is a wonderful way to witness to people about Jesus and to raise the much needed funds for our ministries.
Jail Ministry
Our goal as a school is not just to give students the Spiritual knowledge necessary for witnessing but also to help them learn to witness to different populations, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and age groups.
We have developed a special relationship with our local juvenile detention center where local young people, age 19 and under, who have committed crimes are detained. Our students go there with an evening full of skits, songs and powerful personal testimonies. They learn to witness to young people one on one, to pray for them and to build relationships. Watch video.
Nursing Homes
Most often, the older population feels the most neglected and is the most fragile. With this in mind, student from SMBS visit local nursing homes to spend time with the older people and to give them the much needed attention that they long for. Students spend time witnessing, listening, singing, organizing events and encouraging the elderly.
Good Deeds Ministry
A vital part of the curriculum at SMBS is to help students develop sensitivity to the needs of others. Once a month, students are required to find a needy person, family, child or situation and respond by serving them practically. This ministry helps students see the needs of people and do something about it!
Church Services
In addition to spending time in the classroom, students are required to attend local church services to reenergize and fellowship with other Christians. Students often take part in both church and youth services by preaching, singing, preparig plays and sharing testimonies.
Trips
Students often take trips to other churches, states, and cities to serve, encourage, and have fellowship with other Christians. The trips are taken in a spacious charter bus where they participate in the church service and have the opportunity to interact with the local youth.
Sports
Although it's hard to find a lot of free time between the classroom and practical ministry, whenever the opportunity is presented, students enjoy playing soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
Choir
All students participate in choir consisting of students and local church members. The class will take trip(s) to different churches in several states throughout the term.
Street Ministry
The class is divided into teams that take turns going into the downtown of Jacksonville, where they witness to people on the streets. This gives them the opportunity to not only tell unbelievers about Christ, but also gain experience and confidence that is crucial for work on the missionary field.
Student Prayer
Students also have weekly prayer, where they uplift each others' needs, pray for the future missionary trip, and praise God in prayer.
Video School
As part of the curriculum, the students watch "International School of Ministry on DVD", "The Way of the Master" and other documentary videos. This additional knowledge prepares them for street ministry and the missionary trip.
Missionary Practical Prep Course
The students have a course that is specially designed to give them practical preparation for the missionary trip. They are taught about the living conditions of the villages, practical methods of ministering, what to expect and many other necessary things.
Group presentation
The class is split into smaller groups consisting of 3-4 members each. The groups are assigned a topic and date on which they must present to the entire the class in 50 minutes. They have criteria they must meet and everyone in the group must participate. The presentation is graded on individual participation, creativity, teamwork, etc.
Book Reading and Report
All students are required to bring a Christian book of their choice with them, which they read throughout the semester. This provides a wider spectrum of knowledge to the students. At the end of the course, they are required to write a report summarizing and analyzing the book.
Daily Bible Reading
Since the foundation of our school is the living word of God, all students are encouraged to study the Bible on a deeper and more personal level. In addition, each student is required to read a minimum of three chapters daily.
Bible Quiz "Victory"
Developing a taste for reading and studying the Word of God is one of the main goals of SMBS. To reach that goal administration uses various methods. One of the methods is Bible Quiz, which happens on school's territory annually. There students have a great opportunity to test and deepen their knowledge, examine themselves and receive a monetary reward for first and second places, which is used toward the missionary trip. Bible Quiz is a bright and memorable project, which leaves a mark in minds of both the participants and viewers.
